The Picasso Story
Man – Mask – Myth
»The Picasso-Story« develops a new tour for school classes
The Picasso Story, located in the Humboldt Carré building, is a relatively new addition
to Berlin’s landscape, and an exhibit unique to the city. The exhibition’s latest project is
a series of tours designed especially for school classes. Starting now, school classes
can take advantage of this light, playful tour of The Picasso Story.
In addition to the normal tours for adults, there are now two tours especially designed
for children, one for ages 7 to 11 and another for 12 to 15 years -- both developed by
museum educator Jutta Polic. The new tours help young students learn about artist
Pablo Picasso’s private life and dynamic artistic activity by exploring the exhibition’s
photographs, artifacts, and installations. Equipped with clever worksheets, students
engage with the personal world of this unique productive genius within the context of
the exhibition’s biographical structure. Students also have a chance to develop their
own artistic talents at a series of creative workstations. The tour takes about 1.5 to 2
hours, and is a fascinating experience for young and older children alike.
Alternatively, there is also a 1-hour tour of The Picasso Story in German, English, or
French designed for adolescents and young adults. This tour, led by experienced
guides, allows students to come closer to this 20th century artist, Pablo Picasso, his
personal life within the context of his times.
Just read this review of the tour by a teacher who visited with her school class:
“Today’s students experience a word influenced and structured by the media on a scale
never before seen. Students employ a variety of media competently, appropriately,
critically, creatively, and productively. In this sense, The Picasso Story is very well
suited to support students in their development. The exhibition appeals to many
different senses. Visually, students consume a great deal of information about
Picasso’s artistic process and experiences. At the same time, students have a chance
to gain greater access to the artist, to develop a deeper understanding of Picasso’s
artistic personality, with the help of the exhibition’s film installations. Furthermore, the
exhibition offers students an opportunity to transform their personal experience of
Picasso’s “message” into artistic activity, a feature very well received by my students. I
can only recommend the exhibition The Picasso Story to colleagues teaching art at
other schools.“

Education combined with entertainment – that’s the goal of The Picasso Story. Our
lively and stirring exhibition appeals directly to young visitors, and those out there who
have choosen to remain young at heart. The exhibit displays graphic art and sketches
by the artist, an extensive collection of photographic images by Edward Quinn, showing
Picasso at work, with his family, and in public. Many never before seen photographs
are on display for the first time, and reveal many facets Picasso’s life. Experts, such as
Prof. Dr. Dr. Johannes M. Fox, accompany visitors in video commentary. Two
documentaries round out the exhibit.
The Picasso Story also invites visitors to tap into their own creative spirit by drawing
with paper and pencil, or masquerading as Picasso once did.
